Curriculum & Learning

A student led experience

At Y Community School, we offer a range of learning options for students to choose from. The students’ age, interests, and goals are considered when selecting what best suits them.

Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC)

The Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC) is a flexible, inclusive option designed for students who need additional time, support, or a more hands-on approach to their learning. At Y Community School, the VPC allows students to build confidence, develop essential life and work skills, and learn in ways that suit their individual needs. The program focuses on practical activities, community participation, wellbeing, literacy and numeracy growth, and preparing young people for VET, entry-level work, or continued learning in the Victorian VCE Vocational Major.

VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM)

The VCE Vocational Major is a two-year senior secondary certificate that blends applied learning with real-world experience. Students complete coursework through engaging projects, workplace learning, and vocational training to build practical skills that align with their career interests. At Y Community School, the VCE VM supports students who thrive in hands-on environments, offering a strong pathway into apprenticeships, traineeships, TAFE certificates, and future employment. It allows students to meet senior secondary requirements without the pressure of exams, while still earning a recognised qualification.

Vocational Education and Training (VET)

VET opens up opportunities for students to gain nationally recognised qualifications while still at school. Y Community School partners with local TAFEs and Registered Training Organisations to offer Certificate II and III courses across a wide range of industries, including trades, hospitality, community services, creative industries, outdoor recreation, animal studies, and more. VET gives students practical skills, workplace experience, and a head start in further training or employment. These courses complement each student’s learning plan and align with their long-term goals.

Individualised Learning Plans

Every student at Y Community School has an Individualised Learning Plan (ILP) that outlines their unique strengths, needs, and aspirations. Developed collaboratively with students, families, educators, and youth workers, the ILP guides learning goals, wellbeing supports, and pathway decisions. This personalised approach ensures that students engage with subjects and experiences that are meaningful, achievable, and aligned with their future direction—whether that’s VCE VM, VPC, VET, work experience, or specialised projects. ILPs are reviewed regularly to adapt to each student’s growth, interests, and changing goals.
